Essential oil, what is it?

Apothecary essential oil

The essential oil is the extraction of a plant’s aromatic essence. At Bodia, we do have 7 essential oils that have become our customers’ favorites all around the world. Each plant has its own benefits, so each essential oil has a different function.

What are the plants’ essences we talk about? Some plants have their essence from the leaves, others from their roots. For example, with a plant like eucalyptus, you have to break open the leaf to access the aromatic compounds. In either case, when it comes to incorporating essential oils into wellness usages, it is more practical and accessible to work with a concentrated essential oil than the raw plant itself.

Extracting essential oils

Essential oil Distallation

You may already have heard words like ‘extraction’ and ‘distillation’, but what do they mean and how are they different? The extraction describes the general process of separating essential oils from plant matter, and distillation is one method of extraction. Most of our plant materials are distilled to give us the pure essential oils. By the time you are open a fresh bottle of our essential oils, we ensure you’re getting the products you deserve through our stringent processes.  The oldest method to get the pure essential oil is still a very popular method for some. Steam distillation is the most common method of producing essential oils. With this technique, steam is passed through a large hopper (like a steamer basket in your kitchen) containing raw plant material, causing the plants to release their aromatic compounds, which vaporize and rise with water vapor (steam) into a closed cooling system above the steaming chamber. As the combined steam and plant vapor is cooled in another chamber called a condenser, the vapor turns back into liquid. From here, they travel to a separator, where they split into water on the bottom and oil on the top. The water contains the water-soluble (hydrophilic) parts of the plant’s essence, which is why the remaining water is called a floral water, or a hydrosol. The oil-soluble aromatic compounds rise to the top of the hydrosol in a separate layer, which can be decanted off: This is the essential oil of the plant.

Health benefits of essential oils

Essential Oil for health

For your home, your hair and either for your health,  so little is known about the ability of essential oils to treat certain health conditions.

Here’s a look at some regarding some of the common health problems that essential oils and aromatherapy have been used to treat.

Stress and anxiety: are important health issues around the word. Around 43% of people use some form of alternative therapy to help relieve their symptoms. And one of the best essential oils to chase your stress away is Lemongrass! An oil sourced from the lemongrass herb. Inhaling the scent of the oil (or applying it to skin sparingly after combining it with a carrier oil) is thought to promote relaxation and reduce anxiety symptoms.

Headaches and migraines: Migraines mostly happen to adults. Using peppermint essential oil on your skin can help reduce headaches and migraines. As the freshness smell of peppermint will help relax muscle and ease pain.

Reducing inflammation: Another essential oil with potent anti-inflammatory compounds, Eucalyptus is considered an effective pain reliever and is frequently used in formulations for headaches as well as muscle and joint pain. It’s also extremely beneficial when dealing with sickness.

When does essential oil expire?

Essential oils are natural oil, but it doesn’t mean that they can’t expire. Most essential oils can stay good for at least 2 years. As soon as you open a new bottle or container of essential oils and it comes into contact with oxygen, a process called oxidation begins. The oxidation process involves the changes of oxygen bonds between cells into carbon bonds.

When an oil comes into contact with oxygen, light, and heat, its composition begins to change. Over time, it starts to lose its strength and effectiveness. This is why most essential oils are sold in amber-colored bottles — the darker glass provides better protection against ultraviolet light. Essential oils don’t spoil like food does, but they do change over time. Because it’s hard to determine what the oils have changed into, it’s also hard to determine whether or not they’re safe to use. We recommend you to keep track of how long you’ve had it. You can use a marker to write down the date you opened it on the label.

If your oil isn’t dated, here are some other indications that it might be time to toss it:

  • The smell of the oil has changed since you first opened the bottle
  • The color has changed, or it has become cloudy
  • The consistency is thicker or thinner than it was when you opened it
